Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA

Good dog.

Harpoon Helles Blond Bock

Not a style of beer I drink very often, most likely since it’s a beer that highlights malt over hops but this one is very tasty. You wouldn’t guess the 7.7% abv. It’s main effect is to give me Gordon Biersch nostalgia.

Bonus marks for identifying the other style of beer in shot.

Stone Levitation Ale

Stone’s fantastic Levitation Ale is their version of a session beer. It’s similar in many ways to an English special bitter except with a big hop character. Not overly bitter though some might find it too hoppy for a session. Not me though. Goes well with pork scratchings too.

Warsteiner

A German Pilsener. Tasty enough but not a patch on proper Czech Pilseners. Still, it will always hold sentimental appeal as it’s the beer I drank on my first date with Ealish. I suppose I’m supposed to remember what she wore but I remember what I beer I had ;-)

And Finally…

… for tonight at least. Ginger Lemongrass Wheat beer made by own fair hand. F**king delicious if I say so myself.

AleSmith IPA

Next at the plate is a fantastic California hop-bomb. AleSmith IPA is a tremendous beer. Great hoppy taste & aroma without any harshness to the well balanced bitterness.

Hen’s Tooth

A quality English Ale next. Malty, fruity, complex. The dog liked it too when some spilt on the floor as I opened the bottle. Good dog :-)

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis

Just had a bottle of Sierra Nevada Kellerweis. Very tasty. With being fresh I think it actually tasted more like a proper German Hefe than the real ones that spent weeks on a ship getting here.

Brew Day

After several attempts at the brewing of the year being cancelled due to weather or hangover I’m finally getting to do the first brew of the year today. As seems to have become tradition I’m starting with a batch of my favourite – Amarillo IPA.

My other opening day tradition is to make at least one cock-up. I can’t wait to see what it’ll be this year.

Cornucopia

I made my last post in the hope & expectation that it would propel me back into the habit of updating the blog. It’s been a busy couple of weeks or so since then. I’ll attempt to give the edited highlights for now & explicate later.

I started this compact journey of the soul drinking beer in Boston & commenting how English it tasted. IPA’s based on East Kent Golding & Fuggles rather than Cascade, Chinook & Centennial. Of course the irony of this is my well known love for the citrusy Pacific hops in these situations. Not that I won’t make an exception for 60 Minutes whenever the opportunity presents itself.

And then I arrived back in Britain. Where serving a pint involves a bit of elbow grease, or those of you Atlantically-challenged, the operation of a beer engine. At which point the beer in Boston tasted just like the beer in California. There is just some special about the way we serve beer in the British Isles, but especially the North. A hand pump is without doubt a better way of serving beer but it only fulfils it’s true potential when operated with a skilled hand & more contentiously a sprinkler. That little gadget on the end of a northern hand pump may look like the most miserly water-saving showerhead but it’s impact is closer to that of gravy on roast potatoes – it bring the flavour out.

I guess I still haven’t told you anymore of what I’ve drunk over the last few weeks or how it was but I think I’ve given you the ambience. And that first pint of Bushys was like finding an oasis after an eternity in the desert.
